Review: 2019 Toyota Prius

This four-door hatchback with seating for five delivers a smooth ride, gets great fuel economy, and offers optional all-wheel drive. Performance

The new Prius trims include L Eco, LE, XLE, and Limited which are equipped with a 121-hp 1.8-liter inline four-cylinder engine with an electric motor and a continuously variable transmission. The base model utilizes a front-wheel drivetrain with a lithium-ion battery and achieves an estimated 53 mpg highway and 58 mpg city. Optional is an all-wheel drivetrain with a nickel-metal hydride battery earning an estimated fuel economy of 48 mpg highway and 52 mpg city.

Technology and Convenience

The standard Entune™ multimedia system includes a 6.1-inch touch-screen display, advanced voice recognition, Bluetooth®, Siri® Eyes Free, three USB ports, and a six-speaker sound system. An 11.6-inch high-definition touch-screen, HD Radio™, SiriusXM® satellite radio, navigation, Qi-wireless charging, a color head-up display, and a ten-speaker JBL® GreenEdge® audio system, are available. Convenience comes in the form of a 60/40 split-folding rear seat, automatic climate control, heated power outside mirrors, a Smart Key system, up to 27.4 cubic feet of cargo volume behind the second-row seats, and an optional moonroof.

Safety

An anti-lock brake system, electronic brake-force distribution, smart stop technology, brake assist, enhanced vehicle stability control, and traction control make up the standard Star Safety System™. Also included are a pre-collision system with pedestrian detection, automatic high beams, lane departure alert with steering assist, full-speed dynamic radar cruise control, integrated backup camera, and an 8-airbag system. Optional features consist of blind spot monitor with rear cross-traffic alert, active park assist, intelligence clearance sonar, and adaptive front lighting. The 2019 Toyota Prius earned a 5-Star Overall Safety rating from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration* and a Top Safety Pick from the Insurance Institute of Highway Safety**.
