Tires are the only part of your vehicle that have direct contact with the road. Quality tires enhance your vehicle's performance, handling, safety, and fuel economy. It's important to check your tires for wear and tear, so you know when you need to purchase new ones. When you're ready for new tires, make sure you head over to the service center at Longo Toyota and let our factory-trained technicians get your Toyota vehicle ready for the road.

Toyota Tire Maintenance

The condition of your tires can mean the difference between an accident and a close call. Improper inflation can also lead to blowouts, and tires with half of the tread remaining may cause the vehicle to lose traction on wet surfaces and hydroplane. Knowing what to look for can help you feel more confident behind the wheel.

Tire Rotation

All four tires receive similar exposure to the roadway and elements, but that doesn't mean they wear equally. One of the main reasons this occurs is because the front and rear tires handle different tasks. Over time, you might find that the front tires wear out faster than the rear ones. To compensate for uneven tire wear, your tires should be rotated. Check your owner's manual for mileage recommendations, but it's usually between 5,000 and 7,000 miles.

Tire Balancing

Another way to extend the life of your tires is to have them balanced. During this process, small weights are attached to the wheels to limit the tires' vibration as they turn. This step is important if you have newly installed tires, but you should have it done if you notice any vibrations. Balancing is also done if you have a tire removed from the wheel, such as if there is a puncture in the tire.

Wheel Alignment

This step measures the position of the wheels in relation to specifications stated by the vehicle manufacturer. Every vehicle has certain wheel alignment specifications, so if any alignment measurement isn't within a certain range, the vehicle can experience uneven tire wear. Fuel economy and vehicle handling might also be affected. This step should be taken when you have new tires installed or if the vehicle drifts or pulls to either side.

Signs of Tire Wear

Checking your tires regularly is an important step in ensuring you remain safe on the road. Ideally, you should look at your tires monthly, but if you live in a colder climate, drive over potholes and debris on the road, or drive long distances, be sure to inspect your tires more often. Some of the signs you should look for include the following:
  • Overinflation: Tires with too much air pressure can experience wear in the center of the tread, with less wear occurring on the edges.
  • Underinflation: Tires with too little air pressure can experience wear on the tire's outer edges, with less wear in the center.
  • Uneven tread wear: Also called cupping, this occurs when the wheel is out of balance.
  • Vibration or thumping noise: This can signal out-of-balance tires or a tire with a separated belt.

Test the Tire Tread

To maintain a strong grip on the road, your tires need a decent amount of tread to maintain traction. Just as you check the tire for wear, you should also check the tread. You can either purchase a tread depth gauge, available at most auto parts stores or use the traditional penny test.

The penny test involves placing a penny in the tread with Lincoln's head upside down and facing you. If you're able to see Lincoln's head, the tire has less than 2/32 inches of tread, meaning you need new tires. Place the penny at the tire's outer edge, center, and inside edge.
