2023 Toyota bZ4X: The Small Electric SUV That Does It All

Technology

The bZ4X features a 7-inch top-mounted digital instrument panel that puts essential vehicle information right where you need it. The infotainment system has a 12.3-inch touch screen, Android Auto and Apple CarPlay compatibility, Bluetooth for hands-free calling and media streaming, and a six-speaker sound system with satellite radio. 

A wireless phone charger, five USB ports, and a 12-volt power outlet ensure that everyone’s devices can stay charged and connected. The Limited trim offers digital key capability that lets you use your smartphone for various functions instead of the physical key. You have the option of a premium nine-speaker JBL audio system with an amplifier and subwoofer.

Power and Performance

Front-wheel-drive bZ4X models feature a single electric motor paired with a 71.4 kWh battery. This setup delivers 201 horsepower and 196 lb-ft of torque. With all-wheel drive, you get two electric motors and a 72.8 kWh battery, giving you a system output of 214 horsepower and 248 b-ft of torque.

The bZ4X has small dimensions that make it easy to navigate around the city streets and park in tight spots. On the highway, smooth power delivery and refined ride quality give you a pleasurable driving experience. When you head out on the winding back roads of El Monte, the responsive steering and handling characteristics make for an exciting drive.

Toyota bZ4X Range

You don’t have to suffer from range anxiety in the bZ4X. With front-wheel drive, the XLE has a Toyota-estimated range of up to 252 miles, while the all-wheel-drive models take you up to 228 miles. The Limited trim with front-wheel drive gives you up to 242 miles of range. The all-wheel-drive Limited models have a range of up to 222 miles.

Toyota bZ4X Charge Time

With the bZ4X, you have three charging options. Level 1 is by using a standard 120-volt household outlet. The charge time from low battery light to fully charged is around 50 hours. This is great if you only have a short daily commute.

Level 2 charging is via a 240-volt charger and takes around 9.5 hours from the onset of the low battery light to fully charged. You can find Level 2 chargers at public charging stations or have one installed at home by a licensed electrician.

Some public charging stations offer Level 3 DC fast charging. With this option, the charge time from low battery light to 80% full is as little as 30 minutes with front-wheel drive or 60 minutes for all-wheel-drive models.

Safety Features

Each bZ4X model comes standard with the Toyota Safety Sense 3.0 suite of driver assistance features. It includes adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping assist, lane departure mitigation, forward collision warning with pedestrian detection, and automatic emergency braking. 

You also get blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic warning, a backup camera, safe exit assist, a vehicle proximity notification system, and front and rear parking assist with automatic braking. The Limited trim adds a 360-degree top-down view monitor and a backup camera with dynamic gridlines.

Helping keep you on track is the standard Star Safety System. It offers electronic stability and traction control, an anti-lock braking system, brake assist, electronic brake-force distribution, and Smart Stop Technology. All-wheel-drive models also have downhill assist control for confident driving on steep grades.
