2024 Toyota Land Cruiser vs 4Runner

Toyota is a name that readily comes to mind when most people think of exceptional non-American off-road vehicles. The Japanese auto manufacturer has consistently delivered capable and dependable SUVs that can handle most terrain without breaking a sweat. In 2024, two Toyota models, the 4Runner and the Land Cruiser, continue to uphold this legacy of excellence, each boasting a unique set of features and capabilities to provide an unrivaled off-road experience.

Here’s an in-depth exploration of these Toyota heavyweights,  including all their notable specs and features.

Exterior Design, Styling, and Trims

The 2024 4Runner and Land Cruiser are carryover Toyota models, so it’s no surprise that they each retain the exterior styling of their previous-year counterparts. That said, their exterior designs couldn’t be more different.

For the 2024 edition, the 4Runner maintains its iconic boxy silhouette, which gives it a sense of ruggedness and durability. Its bold front grille and muscular wheel arches give it a commanding presence on and off the road. A 2025 model of the Toyota 4Runner is coming soon, and rumor has it that it will feature a complete redesign. If so, the 2024 model will be the last SUV in this production run to feature the current design and styling.

This model has seven trim options: Limited, TRD Off-Road, TRD Off-Road Premium, SR5, TRD Sport, SR5 Premium, and TRD Pro. The entry-level SR5 trim offers an eclectic array of styling details, including 17-inch alloy wheels, roof rails, and skid plates. As you move through the trim levels, you can enjoy all the features of the SR5 in addition to exclusive touches, including a moonroof and 20-inch alloy wheels for better ground clearance.

Like the 4Runner, the Land Cruiser has undergone few design changes while maintaining the traditional profile of its predecessors. Its silhouette is marked by bold horizontal lines with sculpted corners and shorter overhangs that contribute to a more refined off-road performance.

Regarding trim options, the latest Land Cruiser offers enough variety to suit every need and budget. Its base 1958 model features retro styling with a bold egg-crate grille and round headlights. It also features halogen fog lights for better visibility in low light conditions and 18-inch alloy wheels with decent ground clearance for off-road adventuring. The other trims in the lineup are the mid-tier Land Cruiser and the top-of-the-line First Edition model. Depending on which trim you pick, you can access additional features, including a front skid plate, mud flaps, a roof rack, rock rails, back-door protectors, and a tailgate light.

Engine and Performance

The 2024 edition of the 4Runner maintains its longstanding reputation for reliability, thanks to a robust and dynamic powertrain. Under the hood of every 4Runner sits a 4.0-liter V-6 engine, delivering  270 horsepower with an output of 278 lb-ft of torque. This powertrain pairs nicely with a part-time or full-time four-wheel-drive system for peak off-road performance. The latest 4Runner also scores well in fuel economy, with the four-wheel-drive models getting a combined 17 mpg rating.

The 2024 Land Cruiser doesn’t disappoint when it comes to performance both on and off the road. The iconic SUV has a hybrid powertrain comprising a 2.4-liter turbocharged inline four-cylinder engine paired with an electric motor. This sophisticated propulsion system can generate 326 horsepower and an astonishing 465 lb-ft of torque, making it a force to be reckoned with on difficult terrain.

Interior and Comfort

The 2024 4Runner and Land Cruiser feature spacious cabins and numerous features to maximize driver and passenger comfort. The 4Runner’s wood-inspired accents imbue it with a sense of luxury and sophistication that’s hard to find at this price point.

The base SR5 model comes with standard fabric-trimmed seats with quality padding to ensure comfort for both driver and passengers. Higher trims offer SofTex- or leather-trimmed seating. Heated and ventilated front seats are also available, adding an extra layer of comfort and convenience.

The Land Cruiser delivers a comfortable and well-appointed cabin to elevate the off-road driving experience. The SUV features comfortable leather-trimmed seats, which give the interior a more luxurious feel. Its seats also have heating and cooling capabilities, making long drives more enjoyable. Other available creature comforts on the Land Cruiser include eight-way power-adjustable front seats and a heated steering wheel.

Infotainment and Technology

As flagbearers in Toyota’s SUV production line, the 4Runner and the Land Cruiser are outfitted with modern tech to bring fun and convenience to the driving experience. The centerpiece of the 4Runner’s infotainment system is a stylish 8-inch touchscreen, although higher trims get a larger 12.3-inch touchscreen. Built-in Apple CarPlay and Android Auto capabilities allow you to connect your smartphone and access all your essential apps from the touch screen. The 4Runner also provides a 15-speaker JBL premium sound system for your listening pleasure and three USB ports for charging.

Similar to the 4Runner, the Land Cruiser has a standard 8-inch touchscreen for navigation and entertainment. However, you can upgrade to the 12.3-inch screen if you prefer a larger display. Both touch screens support Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, so connecting your smartphone should be a walk in the park. Also available is a JBL premium sound system, which delivers an immersive music experience.

Safety Features

Safety is a crucial consideration when shopping for your ideal off-road vehicle. Both the 4Runner and the Land Cruiser offer an irresistible selection of driver assistance and safety features to keep you confident on the road. Standard features on every 4Runner model include:

  • Lane departure alert.
  • Pre-collision system with pedestrian detection.
  • Blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert.

Other driver-assistance features in its Star Safety System include vehicle stability control, traction control, and anti-lock braking.

The 2024 Land Cruiser offers an equally impressive suite of safety features as part of Toyota Safety Sense 3.0. These include a pre-collision system, lane departure alert, automatic high beams, and lane tracing assist.
