Proof Bakery

Proof Bakery is just to the west of El Monte in Los Angeles. It’s a worker-owned cooperative, which means everyone who works in the bakery also has a stake in providing the best-baked goods possible. It offers Viennoiseries, pastries, sandwiches, cookies, cakes, and drinks that help you wash down your sweet delight. The Viennoiserie portion features Viennese items that include croissants, pain au chocolate, and a ham and Gruyere croissant. 

The pastries have interesting flavors, such as the Almond Financier, Canelé, and the Harissa Cheddar Scone. Wash it down with traditional coffee or latte, or try the Hojicha latte. Other interesting treats include chocolate shortbread, vanilla butter cookies, and biscotti. 

You’ll find Proof Bakery in a space that’s been home to a bakery of some kind since the early 1960s. In 2010, Na Young Ma took over the space and made it a point to include the bakery staff in the everyday decision-making processes. In 2021, Na Young turned the bakery into an employee-owned cooperative, giving everyone an equitable share in the business. Now everyone works together to obtain the best quality ingredients and deliver innovative baked goods to its customers. 

République

République is a newer bakery located in a storied building and situated in the space of the former La Brea Bakery. It features a bakery and a restaurant that uses the best quality ingredients it can source for the menus. When you step inside, you’re confronted with an incredible selection of baked goods, making it difficult to walk out with one or two things. The bakery menu changes regularly, and the selection depends on what’s in season for the final offerings. You can expect to find delicious baked bread, croissants, and muffins available daily. 

This restaurant and bakery is at 624 S. La Brea Ave. in Los Angeles. It’s open Sunday through Monday with hours from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. daily and extra hours from 5:30 p.m. to 10 p.m., Tuesday through Friday and 5 p.m. to 10 p.m. Saturday. Reservations are available for the evening hours. 

Cake and Art 

Cake and Art is a famous bakery located in West Hollywood that first opened its door as an outlet for owner Glenn von Kickle’s passion for food and art. The bakery gained notoriety and fame over the following decades and has become the go-to bakery for the entertainment industry and celebrities in Los Angeles. The good news is that you don’t have to be a celebrity to darken the doorstep of Cake and Art.
