The Toyota Tundra is a full-size pickup with the versatility to take on any challenge at the job site or head out of town for the weekend. With a range of cargo bed options, tremendous towing capacity, and a powerful engine lineup, the Tundra is strong in all the key departments that are important to Texas truck shoppers. If you’re considering purchasing a Tundra, take a look at the overview of its main features put together by our Toyota pickup experts here at Longo Toyota of Prosper.

Tundra Engine and Performance

Toyota offers two engine options in the Tundra. The first is a twin-turbocharged V-6 that can put out 389 horsepower. The second also includes the twin-turbocharged V-6, but an electric motor is added to create a hybrid powertrain that can churn out 437 horsepower. Both engine options are paired with a 10-speed automatic transmission. We’ve got a great post that goes in-depth about the i-FORCE MAX hybrid system if you have more questions.

The V-6 engine manages 18 mpg on city roads and 23 mpg on the highway with rear-wheel drive. If you upgrade to four-wheel drive, each rating drops by 1 mpg. In terms of towing and hauling, the Tundra can pull up to 12,000 pounds at the rear and haul 1,940 pounds in its bed.

Toyota Tundra Cargo Beds

There are three cargo bed options, but not all of them are available with every cab style. As a result, you may want to check out our rundown of the cab options below before you make a final decision on your cargo bed.

If you want the maximum cargo-carrying capacity possible, the Tundra’s longest cargo bed is your best choice. It’s 8 feet, 1 inch long. The two shorter beds measure 6 feet, 6 inches, and 5 feet, 6 inches in length.

Tundra Cab Styles

There are two cab styles to choose from Double Cab and CrewMax Cab. Both cabs can seat up to five people. The CrewMax Cab offers a lot more legroom in the rear, making it ideal for adult passengers on longer trips. However, the Double Cab will do just fine if passengers are riding in the second row on short trips. Keep in mind that if you want the longest cargo bed, it’s only available with the Double Cab. On the other hand, the shortest cargo bed is only available with the CrewMax.

In the base trim, the Tundra’s cab has cloth upholstery. However, you can add some luxurious touches as you move up through the trims, such as synthetic leather and genuine leather upholstery. Power-adjustable front seats are also on offer.

Tundra Technology Features

The standard infotainment system in the Tundra features an 8-inch screen and smartphone compatibility with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. If you choose the Double Cab, a six-speaker stereo comes standard. The CrewMax Cab gets a nine-speaker sound system.

One of the most convenient infotainment features is the Tundra’s voice recognition software. All you need to do is say “Hey, Toyota” before asking it to adjust your stereo volume or climate control temperature.

Whether you’re using your Tundra as a work truck or a recreational vehicle with friends or family, you’ll probably be on the road a lot of the time. The Tundra’s Wi-Fi hot spot will come in handy during your journeys, allowing you to stay connected wherever you may be.

You can upgrade the infotainment system with a massive 14-inch screen, a 12-speaker premium stereo, and wireless device charging.

Toyota Tundra Safety

Toyota’s driver safety package in the Tundra is known as Toyota Safety Sense 2.5. Even in the base trim, this package includes a lot of safety tech. You get forward collision warning with pedestrian detection, automatic emergency braking, and adaptive cruise control as standard features. The Tundra also has a traffic sign recognition system that can alert you to speed limits and other driving requirements.

Optional upgrades include blind spot recognition, which is sure to come in handy if you’re towing a trailer. The optional surround-view parking camera provides you with an aerial shot of your truck to help you maneuver in and out of tight parking spaces.

Tundra Trims

You can choose from six trims if you purchase the Tundra: SR, SR5, Limited, Platinum, 1794 Edition, and TRD Pro. One major factor influencing your choice of trim will be the level of comfort you want in the cab. However, a second factor worth keeping in mind is that not all trims are available with all cargo bed and cab configurations.

The SR trim is available with the Double Cab only. If you want the CrewMax, the first trim this cab is offered in is the SR5. If you want to add some comfort to the cabin, the Limited features synthetic leather upholstery, heated and power-adjustable front seats, and a heated steering wheel. The Limited offers both the Double and CrewMax cabs.

The Platinum trim takes luxury to the next level with genuine leather seats, heated and ventilated rear-row seats, and a moonroof. In the cargo bed, you also benefit from a household-style power outlet and bed lighting. Only the CrewMax cab is offered with the Platinum trim. The same is true for the 1794 Edition, which is based on the Platinum’s features but adds special design elements in the cab and on the exterior.

If you plan on taking your Tundra off the beaten path, the TRD Pro trim is the right one for you. It adds an upgraded suspension system, crawl control, and Fox shocks. Toyota also gives the TRD Pro a multi-terrain monitor so you can keep track of the uneven ground up ahead when you’re off-roading. The TRD Pro is sold only with the CrewMax cab.

We hope that our overview of the Toyota Tundra has convinced you of just how great this pickup is. Whether you’re in the market for a durable truck for the job site or a brawny pickup with a luxurious interior to hit the trails on the weekend, you can configure the Tundra to meet your needs.
