The Toyota Tundra is a full-size pickup with the versatility to take on any challenge at the job site or head out of town for the weekend. With a range of cargo bed options, tremendous towing capacity, and a powerful engine lineup, the Tundra is strong in all the key departments that are important to Texas truck shoppers. If you’re considering purchasing a Tundra, take a look at the overview of its main features put together by our Toyota pickup experts here at Longo Toyota of Prosper.

Tundra Engine and Performance

Toyota offers two engine options in the Tundra. The first is a twin-turbocharged V-6 that can put out 389 horsepower. The second also includes the twin-turbocharged V-6, but an electric motor is added to create a hybrid powertrain that can churn out 437 horsepower. Both engine options are paired with a 10-speed automatic transmission. We’ve got a great post that goes in-depth about the i-FORCE MAX hybrid system if you have more questions.

The V-6 engine manages 18 mpg on city roads and 23 mpg on the highway with rear-wheel drive. If you upgrade to four-wheel drive, each rating drops by 1 mpg. In terms of towing and hauling, the Tundra can pull up to 12,000 pounds at the rear and haul 1,940 pounds in its bed.

Toyota Tundra Cargo Beds

There are three cargo bed options, but not all of them are available with every cab style. As a result, you may want to check out our rundown of the cab options below before you make a final decision on your cargo bed.

If you want the maximum cargo-carrying capacity possible, the Tundra’s longest cargo bed is your best choice. It’s 8 feet, 1 inch long. The two shorter beds measure 6 feet, 6 inches, and 5 feet, 6 inches in length.

Tundra Cab Styles

There are two cab styles to choose from Double Cab and CrewMax Cab. Both cabs can seat up to five people. The CrewMax Cab offers a lot more legroom in the rear, making it ideal for adult passengers on longer trips. However, the Double Cab will do just fine if passengers are riding in the second row on short trips. Keep in mind that if you want the longest cargo bed, it’s only available with the Double Cab. On the other hand, the shortest cargo bed is only available with the CrewMax.

In the base trim, the Tundra’s cab has cloth upholstery. However, you can add some luxurious touches as you move up through the trims, such as synthetic leather and genuine leather upholstery. Power-adjustable front seats are also on offer.

Tundra Technology Features

The standard infotainment system in the Tundra features an 8-inch screen and smartphone compatibility with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. If you choose the Double Cab, a six-speaker stereo comes standard. The CrewMax Cab gets a nine-speaker sound system.

One of the most convenient infotainment features is the Tundra’s voice recognition software. All you need to do is say “Hey, Toyota” before asking it to adjust your stereo volume or climate control temperature.

Whether you’re using your Tundra as a work truck or a recreational vehicle with friends or family, you’ll probably be on the road a lot of the time. The Tundra’s Wi-Fi hot spot will come in handy during your journeys, allowing you to stay connected wherever you may be.

You can upgrade the infotainment system with a massive 14-inch screen, a 12-speaker premium stereo, and wireless device charging.

Toyota Tundra Safety

Toyota’s driver safety package in the Tundra is known as Toyota Safety Sense 2.5. Even in the base trim, this package includes a lot of safety tech. You get forward collision warning with pedestrian detection, automatic emergency braking, and adaptive cruise control as standard features. The Tundra also has a traffic sign recognition system that can alert you to speed limits and other driving requirements.

Optional upgrades include blind spot recognition, which is sure to come in handy if you’re towing a trailer. The optional surround-view parking camera provides you with an aerial shot of your truck to help you maneuver in and out of tight parking spaces.

Tundra Trims

You can choose from six trims if you purchase the Tundra: SR, SR5, Limited, Platinum, 1794 Edition, and TRD Pro. One major factor influencing your choice of trim will be the level of comfort you want in the cab. However, a second factor worth keeping in mind is that not all trims are available with all cargo bed and cab configurations.

The SR trim is available with the Double Cab only. If you want the CrewMax, the first trim this cab is offered in is the SR5. If you want to add some comfort to the cabin, the Limited features synthetic leather upholstery, heated and power-adjustable front seats, and a heated steering wheel. The Limited offers both the Double and CrewMax cabs.

The Platinum trim takes luxury to the next level with genuine leather seats, heated and ventilated rear-row seats, and a moonroof. In the cargo bed, you also benefit from a household-style power outlet and bed lighting. Only the CrewMax cab is offered with the Platinum trim. The same is true for the 1794 Edition, which is based on the Platinum’s features but adds special design elements in the cab and on the exterior.

If you plan on taking your Tundra off the beaten path, the TRD Pro trim is the right one for you. It adds an upgraded suspension system, crawl control, and Fox shocks. Toyota also gives the TRD Pro a multi-terrain monitor so you can keep track of the uneven ground up ahead when you’re off-roading. The TRD Pro is sold only with the CrewMax cab.

We hope that our overview of the Toyota Tundra has convinced you of just how great this pickup is. Whether you’re in the market for a durable truck for the job site or a brawny pickup with a luxurious interior to hit the trails on the weekend, you can configure the Tundra to meet your needs.

If you own an electric vehicle or plug-in hybrid in or around El Monte, you’d probably be interested to know where you can recharge your battery while you’re on the go. El Monte has dozens of EV charging sites to choose from, including several fast DC charging stations. Our local experts here at Longo Toyota have put together a list of some of the most popular EV charging sites in the city.

Types of EV Charging Stations in El Monte, CA

Before we take you through the list of charging stations, there are a few things you should know about the different types of EV charging sites on offer. You can choose from three different types of electric car charging, which are known as level 1, level 2, and level 3.

A level 1 charger is a basic household outlet that everyone has in their home. While level 1 chargers are cheap and easy to find, they’re also very slow at recharging your EV. On average, it can take upwards of 40 hours to fully charge a battery, making level 1 chargers impractical for most drivers.

Level 2 chargers are more powerful, being able to refill a battery in approximately 8 to 10 hours. Level 2 chargers are found at public sites across California, but you can also install them in your home for a fee.

If you want to take advantage of the fastest EV charging option in El Monte, you’ll want to look for sites with level 3 charging, which is also sometimes called DC charging. These sites can charge your battery in an hour or less, allowing you to get back on the road quickly.

Now that you know some more about how EV charging works, let’s take a look at some of the best sites in El Monte.

Santa Fe Trail Plaza

What could be better than passing the time your EV takes to recharge its battery by going shopping or enjoying a bite to eat? That’s exactly what you can do at Santa Fe Trail Plaza, which features grocery stores, retail outlets, and popular food and drink options across its 114,000-square-foot area.

The EV charging stations are located behind We C Kids Dental. There are three types of charging station on offer at this site: two Tesla Supercharge plugs, two EVgo CCS/SAE plugs, and two EVgo CHAdeMO plugs. Variable charging rates are offered at these stations.

Location: 10601 Valley Blvd., El Monte.

Hours of operation: Accessible 24/7.

San Gabriel Valley Airport

You’ll find two level 2 charging plugs in the parking lot in front of the airport‘s main terminal building. Since this location is a public airport, the charging stations are available free of charge.

The airport building offers dining options, an airport tour, and flight training programs. A patio is open to the public on the west side of the building for viewing aircraft in action. Restrooms are available inside the airport building, which is open from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Sunday.

Location: 4233 Santa Anita Blvd., El Monte.

Hours of operation: The chargers are accessible 24/7, while the airport is open 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day.

El Monte Metro Station

El Monte Metro Station offers connections for buses and transit throughout the local area and further afield. The station offers free parking for Metro passengers, with overnight parking also allowed.

Although there are eight plugs spread across four level 2 charging stations at this location, recent reviews on the popular PlugShare site suggest that only the two plugs at the station on the far-right are in working order. The fee is $0.30 per kilowatt hour of energy used.

Location: 10925 Railroad St., El Monte.

Hours of operation: Accessible 24/7.

Norms

Norms operates several diners across Los Angeles County and surrounding areas. It has been part of the region’s dining landscape for over seven decades, winning a loyal following thanks to its casual eating experience and family-friendly food options. The El Monte location lives up to this reputation, and also has the added bonus of EV charging for your vehicle.

You’ll find two level 2 chargers near the entrance to the restaurant. There’s another charging point across the parking lot too. The cost to charge your EV is $0.19 per kilowatt hour, plus a $1-per-hour parking fee.

Location: 10640 Valley Blvd., El Monte.

Hours of operation: Accessible 24/7.

Valley Mall

Valley Mall used to be called Main Street during the 1960s. Today, It’s home to a range of local stores catering to all your needs, including groceries, auto parts, and much more. The EV chargers on Valley Mall were installed by city authorities to help increase the use of electric vehicles. They’re located in the Valley Mall parking lot at 10707 Valley Mall.

There are two level 2 charge stations operated by the ChargePoint network. The cost for you will be $0.30 per kilowatt hour. Parking at this location is free of charge. Previous users report that you need to scan your phone’s app in order to access the charging stations.

Location: 10707 Valley Mall, El Monte.

Hours of operation: Accessible 24/7.

El Monte Union High School District

The local high school district has partnered with the regional electricity utility to install several level 2 EV charging sites across high school campuses in the city. These chargers are available at Rosemead, Arroyo, and Mountain View high schools. The district plans to significantly expand charging stations across its sites, so keep checking back on its website to see the latest.

The 21 level 2 chargers spread across the three high schools cost $0.25 per kilowatt hour to use and are accessible via the EV Connect app.

So, there you have it! Our El Monte EV experts here at Longo Toyota have given you a rundown of some of the best electric vehicle charging stations around here. With more and more drivers switching from gas to electric, automobile manufacturers such as Toyota have been hard at work. A leader in the hybrid league, Toyota has come out with their bZ, or beyond zero, emissions initiative. We’re proud to introduce the 2023 Toyota bZ4X, an all-electric SUV with the style, ease, and convenience that comes from the Toyota name. Here are all of the top features of the 2023 Toyota bZ4X and more regarding performance, comfort, safety, and more.

The 2023 Toyota bZ4X

2023 Toyota bZ4X

2023 Toyota bZ4X

The 2023 Toyota bZ4X name might seem confusing at first, but the bZ stands for Beyond Zero emissions, the number 4 indicates the vehicle size, and the X stands for the SUV body style. You can get the 2023 Toyota bZ4X in two trim levels, the XLE and the Limited. This all-new all-electric vehicle offers the practicality you expect from an EV, the size and comfort you expect from an SUV, and the satisfying power and performance you expect from Toyota.

Exterior Features and Options

With two available trim levels, the bZ4X offers you a bold, customizable exterior design. There’s but one standard color, Black, though you can opt for White, Silver, Red, or Gray for an additional cost. The Limited can be paired with a stylish black roof as well. On the XLE, you’ll notice 18-inch alloy wheels with covers, a unique center bumper with a thin lower grille, and black window trim.

Moving up to the Limited adds 20-inch machine-finished multi-spoke wheels with gray accents, a foot-activated power liftgate, and chrome window trim. You can also add a split roof rear spoiler. Each trim showcases the unique hammerhead hood design with a bold black-painted accent, a ducktail rear spoiler, and black-painted overfenders with front air curtains.

Convenient Charging

Charging has never been easier or more convenient than it is with the 2023 bZ4X. There are three levels of charging options available. Level 1 is 120-Volt, an excellent choice for drivers with shorter commutes, allowing you to go from low battery to a 100% charge using a common household outlet. It charges at about four miles per hour of charging time.

Level 2 is a 240-Volt that offers faster charging in your home at about 23 miles per hour of charge time. Installation is easy and will allow your bZ4X to charge in about 9.5 hours fully. Lastly, there’s the Level 3 or the DC Fast Charging option. A charging station takes you from a low battery light to about an 80% charge in around 30 minutes on the front-wheel-drive or 60 minutes with the all-wheel-drive. This method is currently only available at public charging stations. In the El Monte area? You can find a helpful guide to El Monte EV charging locations in our post!

All-Electric Power

The bZ4X is the first-ever Toyota to use the new Toyota New Global Architecture platform, specifically for Toyota electric vehicles. This allows for a steady, comfortable ride and outstanding performance. The electric power delivers nearly instant torque. The front-wheel-drive produces 201 horsepower and a max of 196 pound-feet, while the all-wheel-drive version will deliver 248 pound-feet of torque and 214 horsepower.

An EPA-estimated 252-mile range allows you to go further without stopping to charge. Regenerative braking is utilized to help capture some of the energy that would otherwise be lost. The powerful electric motor can also be paired with the available all-wheel-drive system with X-Mode so you can drive with confidence in rain, snow, mud, and other road conditions if the need arises.

Advanced Toyota Safety Sense 3.0 System

The 2023 bZ4X comes with the advanced Toyota Safety Sense 3.0 program to help keep you out of harm’s way and help you drive with confidence. It includes a pre-collision system with pedestrian detection, a lane departure alert with steering assist, and lane tracing assist. The road sign assist program detects stop signs, speed limit signs, and more and displays them clearly for you to see.

The full-speed range dynamic radar cruise control system is intended for highway use and allows you to drive at a predetermined speed. It uses distance control to help your vehicle maintain a safe distance from the vehicle in front of you.

Comfort and Interior Design

The interior of the all-new bZ4X offers the warmth, comfort, and space your family deserves. The open layout provides abundant cargo and legroom so that nobody has to sacrifice their space. Inside the XLE, you’ll notice a leather-trimmed steering wheel, dial-type shift knob, and fabric/Softex-trimmed seats. You also get dual-zone automatic climate control, a soft-touch fabric dashboard, and a convenient cargo area tonneau cover.

The Limited has additional features such as a heated leather-trimmed steering wheel, heated and ventilated front seats with available heated rear seats, and ambient floor lighting. A Qi-compatible wireless smartphone charger will help keep all your devices at full battery. You’ll also find several charging and media ports throughout the vehicle. A standard 12.3-inch multimedia screen will display information from your phone, thanks to wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. This connectivity will allow you to make calls, access your navigation system, and easily turn on your favorite playlist.

Keeping your car or truck in good mechanical and cosmetic condition is key to its longevity and resale value. Regular maintenance like oil changes and ensuring brakes and other components are in excellent shape keep things running under the hood. In addition, regular detailing boosts curb appeal and helps prevent mechanical issues like corrosion of undercarriage components. All in all, detailing gives your car that showroom look by giving it a thorough clean. If you’re in the El Monte, California, area, Longo Toyota has a few tips on how to detail your vehicle, inside and out.

What Areas of Your Vehicle Need Cleaning?

Detailing helps improve curb appeal, making your car or truck look better by removing accumulations of dirt and grime and applying protective waxes. While curb appeal is important, detailing also helps maintain less visible areas. Cleaning harder-to-see areas like vents and under the trunk lid helps remove dirt and grime, leading to fewer issues. Detailing is also an excellent time to spot problems like dings in the paint that can harbor rust or cracked door gaskets that lead to leaks. A good detailing job should give your car or truck the showroom feel and that new-car smell.

What Tools Do You Need to Detail Your Vehicle?

A complete professional detailing job can cost hundreds of dollars and take specialized tools for cleaning, waxing, fixing paint damage, and applying protective coatings. While most people don’t have the specialized tools or skills for such a detailing, there are ways to clean and protect your vehicle from the comfort of your driveway. Be sure to invest in high-quality products for reliable results.

While you may already have several of the following helpful tools, below is a list to get you started on a quality home detailing project. Remember that these supplies will last a long time once you add them to your collection:

  • Two buckets, preferably two to five gallons, for soapy and clean water.
  • Car wash soap formulated for automotive finishes.
  • Cleaning tools, such as a soft microfiber mitt for washing as well as various soft and firm brushes to remove dirt and dust in tight spaces.
  • Wheel cleaners for removing brake dust and road grime from rims and hubcaps, plus tire or whitewall tire cleaner.
  • Glass cleaners, such as home window cleaners or specialty products.
  • A clay bar, a synthetic plastic putty, and detailing spray for pulling embedded dirt and contaminants from paint, glass, plastic lenses, and wheels.
  • Wax for protecting paint and shine and a foam pad applicator.
  • At least three microfiber towels to clean and dry without causing abrasion.
  • Interior cleaning and protective products for fabric, carpet, vinyl, and leather.
  • A vacuum with attachments, such as a household vacuum or a shop vac.

What Are the Steps for Outside Detailing?

Detailing the exterior of your car or truck involves more than hosing it off with water and a little soap. The in-depth exterior detailing process shouldn’t begin until the vehicle is out of direct sunlight and the surface is cool. Sunlight and heat can dry out surfaces, leaving stains or interfering with detailing products. Open the doors, tailgates, and trunk lids while washing to clear debris like leaves and dirt from the jambs and carefully wash without getting soapy water inside. Inspect paint, trim, and other components for damage.

Please note that microfiber mitts have replaced sponges as the preferred way to wash with a soft touch. Also, detailing the exterior of your car can be different in El Monte, California, than it is for areas of the country that have to worry about snow and road salt.

There are a few key steps to exterior detailing:

  • Remove loose dirt and contaminants by pre-rinsing your car to prevent scratching or damage to the surfaces.
  • Starting from the top and doing one section at a time, wash your car with one bucket of soapy water and one bucket of clean water using a wash mitt, frequently rinsing to remove contaminants.
  • Rinse each section of the car when washing is done, removing soap residue before it dries.
  • Thoroughly dry the car with a microfiber towel.
  • If needed, use a clay bar to remove contaminants after lubricating the surface with detailing spray, drying with a microfiber towel when the surface is smooth and clean. Consider treating the plastic trim before applying wax.
  • Wax the car, completing one section at a time by applying with a foam applicator, buffing with circular motions, and removing excess with a microfiber towel.
  • Wash wheels one at a time, following instructions on the wheel-cleaning products since they often contain strong cleaning chemicals.

What Are the Steps for Inside Detailing?

Interior detailing will help keep trim pieces, upholstery, carpeting, and other areas in good shape. Weather, kids, pets, and daily life can leave behind messes, some of which are hard to find and clean. There are a few basic steps to an interior detailing job that will make your car or truck feel like new:

  • Clean interior panels, vents, and other components with detailing spray or ammonia-free glass cleaner. Brushes and a microfiber towel can help clean tight spaces like vents and dirty areas like armrests.
  • Use a leather cleaner or upholstery cleaner on the seats.
  • Vacuum the carpet and clean the floor mats, scrubbing excessive dirt to loosen it and treating stain spots. A carpet steamer or foaming spray cleaner may be needed, but let the carpet dry before putting the floor mats back.
  • Clean the windows inside and out with a glass cleaner, rolling down windows to get any hidden dirt.
  • Complete the finishing touches like spraying deodorizer and applying protectant to plastic and vinyl surfaces to combat fading in the sun.

Highland Park Bowling

Established in 1927, Highland Park Bowling is the oldest bowling alley in Los Angeles. It began as a combination of doctors’ offices, a pharmacy, a music store, and a recreation space during the Prohibition Era. Patrons would visit a doctor at one of the upstairs offices to get a prescription for medicinal whiskey and then visit the pharmacy to fill it before going bowling.

An Italian immigrant named Joseph “Mr. T” Teresa purchased the building in 1966 and renamed it Mr. T’s Bowl. He renovated the space, covering the original designs and converting the area into a music venue. However, when 1933 Group acquired the building, it restored the space to its original appearance and refurbished the lanes to create the space Los Angeles residents love today.

Highland Park Bowling recommends making reservations before your visit. It recommends only one to six guests per lane but generally allows a maximum of eight guests per lane. And it’s only open to guests ages 21 and up after 8 p.m. Reservations are available in hour-long increments, and the alley charges different rates based on time of day and day of the week. Be sure to review its calendar of special events before planning your bowling outing.

Highland Park Bowling also offers a selection of food and drinks that celebrate its rich history. The venue’s menu includes a selection of pizzas, burgers, appetizers, and desserts. Pair your food with a beer, a glass of wine, or one of its signature cocktails.

XLanes doesn’t require reservations, but it does recommend them. Bowling pricing varies by day of the week and time of day, but there’s a maximum of six people and a limit of two hours per party per lane. There’s a fee for shoe rental, but your entire party may receive a discount for booking an hourly rental. The venue also has space for hosting special events and has the option to buy out the entire venue.

The second-row seats come in either bench or captain’s style reclining chairs. In the third row, you’ll find the exclusive Sequoia sliding row with an adjustable cargo shelf system, which allows the seats to slide six inches to adjust spacing. Both the second and third-row seats can fold forward to allow more space for cargo, so you’ll have no trouble fitting everything needed for even the most equipment-heavy trip.

If you’re looking for luxury, you won’t be disappointed. You can select the available leather-trimmed seating with heated and ventilated options for the first and second rows. You can also opt for a panoramic moonroof, which you activate with the push of a button, to enjoy the beauty of nature above you as you soar across the country on your adventures.

Exterior

Exterior color options for the new Sequoia have increased from the six available for the 2022 model to 11 for the 2023 model. These include white, wind chill pearl, lunar rock, celestial silver metallic, magnetic gray metallic, army green, midnight black metallic, blueprint blue, smoked mesquite, and supersonic red. If you choose the TRD Pro trim, you can also access the exclusive solar octane orange.

The design of this SUV is big and bold. You’ll radiate power as you roll down the highway in this towering car with a wide, squat stance perfect for off-roading. The front features a black and silver grille and a dark tinted windshield. Silver front and rear bumpers also add to the bold 2023 Sequoia look. In the back, take advantage of the hands-free liftgate that allows you to open the trunk via a motion-activated foot sensor so you can load in your gear with ease.

Trims

The new Sequoia has distilled the number of available trim levels. The 2022 model is available in six trims: the SR5, TRD Sport, Limited, Nightshade Edition, Platinum, and TRD Pro. On the other hand, the 2023 model comes in the SR5, Limited, Platinum, TRD Pro, and the Capstone trims. The different trims all feature unique styles and comfort elements. If you’re looking for a comprehensive option with plenty of pizazz, the SR5, and Limited trims are excellent choices. The TRD Pro, meanwhile, is perfect for adventurers, and those seeking interior luxury might enjoy the Platinum or Capstone trims.

The TRD Pro also has several exterior features that make it a particularly exciting choice. You can enjoy the style and protection of a quarter-inch aluminum TRD front skid plate, the power of 18-inch TRD alloy wheels, and a wide stance that makes it an ideal off-roading vehicle. Alternatively, the brand new Capstone trim level offers the most luxurious Sequoia experience yet. This includes semi-aniline leather-trimmed seats in an exclusively black and white, dual-tone color scheme. It is also the first Toyota Sequoia to offer 22-inch chrome wheels.

Power and Performance

This vehicle boasts a 437-horsepower 3.5-liter i-FORCE MAX twin-turbo hybrid engine with 583 pound-feet of torque and a maximum towing limit of 9,000 pounds. This adds a significant amount of power over the 2022’s 381-horsepower 5.7-liter i-FORCE V-8 engine, which has a towing capacity of 7,400 pounds. While either model is certainly powerful, the 2023 might give you just the boost you’ve been craving. Whether you’re looking for a vehicle that can handle family road trips or solo off-road adventuring, you won’t be disappointed by the 2023 Toyota Sequoia.

The new model also features a boxed frame and a contemporary chassis that provides the structure and comfort necessary for such power. New laser welding technology allows for a design that is more rigid yet more comfortable than ever before. It also offers state-of-the-art suspension and steering for a smooth driving experience. Also new with the 2023 model is the option to select your own drive mode. You can choose Eco, Normal, or Sport, depending on your driving conditions.

Technology

The multimedia touch-screen display has grown from 7 inches in the 2022 Sequoia to 8 inches in the 2023 model. There is also an available 14-inch touch-screen display as well as a 10-inch head-up display that projects information directly onto the windshield for those looking for a striking technological advancement. You can enable voice commands for a truly hands-free entertainment experience. Just say, “Hey Toyota” to activate GPS directions, skip songs, increase or decrease audio volume, or change the climate control settings.

In addition, the 2023 Toyota Sequoia offers an available trailer backup guide with a straight path assist that can make towing easier than ever before.

Safety

The safety features in the 2023 Toyota Sequoia are the Sense 2.5 System shared between all Sequoia grades. Drivers can also rely on emergency steering assistance technology, dynamic radar cruise control, a lane departure alert, a road sign assist system, and automatic high beams to help keep you safe at night. Furthermore, there is a blind spot monitoring system, a parking assist system, and backup cameras to help you park safely.

If you love gardening, you’re not alone. There is nothing better than getting outside and seeing what you can bring to life with just a little dirt, sunshine, and water. If you’re gardening in El Monte, California, it can be particularly rewarding to keep a garden green and thriving amidst the hot summer days. To help you do so, our team at Longo Toyota has curated some tips to get your garden flourishing this year.

Make a Plan

Potted plants in a backyard

While it may be tempting to buy all the most eye-catching seed packets at the store, it can be extremely helpful to take a moment to plan your garden before you begin. Just a little planning can go a long way in helping you create a thriving and successful yard. First, consider what type of soil you have, your garden’s access to sunlight, and its access to water. El Monte in the summer is often hot and dry, so you might consider planting drought-tolerant plants.

A few drought-tolerant flowers include the California Fuchsia, the California Redbud, and the California Yarrow. Drought-tolerant vegetables include quinoa, lima beans, corn, and okra. You can also consider what kind of plants you’ve successfully grown in the past. It can be a good idea to plan your garden this year with a mixture of reliable garden staples you know are likely to do well and new plants that might serve as a fun adventure or challenge. Next, decide how you plan to lay out your garden, then purchase the appropriate seeds and any other tools you might need.

Use Compost

Composting can be a great way to help both your garden and the environment. Instead of throwing old food waste into the garbage, start a compost bin in your yard. You can make your own compost bin by filling a plastic storage bin with a base of mulch and leaves, then drilling holes in the top of the bin. Fill it with worms and some dirt, then toss in your food waste, turning it over occasionally. You can also purchase a compost bin set from a local home or garden store.

Once you have your bin set up, let your food waste break down over the course of the year, then use the nutrient-rich compost that results in nourishing your garden. Adding worms can help speed up the process of decomposition. Once it’s ready, just spread the compost around the base of your plants with your dirt. This helps to balance the soil density, provide important nutrients, and help the plants develop healthy roots.

Feed and Water Well

For each plant you add to your garden, make sure you research the proper amount of water to use. It can be helpful to group your plants by the amount of water they need. When you water, it is often helpful to water at the base of the plant rather than sprinkling the leaves. As California summers can be particularly dry, it’s a good idea to water your garden with plenty of water one or two times every week.

You can also introduce plant food or fertilizer to your garden. This can help supplement the nutrients in your garden soil and help your plants grow strong and healthy. You can start adding fertilizer to your soil even before your plants emerge. Throughout the summer, it’s a good idea to keep a regular feeding schedule. How often you should feed them may depend on what type of plant you grow. For example, tomatoes, peppers, and many other vegetables might benefit from plant food every one or two weeks, while some flowers require fertilization only every couple of months.

Look Out for Pests

As a gardener, it’s important to keep on the lookout for pests that might otherwise eat all your hard work. Larger pests, like deer and rabbits, can eat large amounts of plants from a garden at one time. Smaller pests, like slugs and snails, can infest garden plots and gnaw holes through your plants. In the El Monte area, small pests like ants, aphids, hornworms, spider mites, snails, and slugs are common. You might also contend with larger pests like gophers and rats.

You can help protect your plants by taking preventative measures against garden pests. Consider using netting around your most appetizing vegetables, instituting floating garden beds, or using organic pest control substances on your flowers. You can include certain herbs in your garden that naturally keep away certain pests. For example, you can repel aphids with chives and coriander. You can repel ants with tansy and bean beetles with rosemary. You might do some research on the best options to repel the pests common in your neighborhood.

Know When to Prune

Pruning can sometimes feel counterintuitive. After all, you’ve worked so hard to grow the plant; why should you cut some of it off? Appropriate pruning can, however, be highly beneficial to your plant’s health. By cutting off dead parts of your plant, you can help the plant focus its energy on the living areas. This may lead to a more flourishing garden in the end. If you’re not sure which plants to prune or when to prune them, you can research each one and find how-to training guides to help.

Start Delicate Plants Inside

If you are growing plants from seeds, the unpredictable outside conditions and changing temperature might be threatening in those vital first few months. For this reason, it can be a good idea to start some delicate plants indoors when you intend to grow them yourself from seeds. You can set up pots with seeds on windowsills or under heat lamps. As the seeds begin to grow, you can transfer the pots outside and, eventually, replant the plants into the ground.

We’ve just listed six wonderful tips for gardeners in the El Monte area. If you’re a gardening aficionado, we hope these tips will be helpful to you. Speaking of helpful, if you need car assistance to get to the garden store this summer, don’t hesitate to give us a call at 626-377-9741.
